Reflection of the Past While Pointing to the Future

Reflection of the past while pointing to the future. Christmas tree beside the water with a reflection.

Reflection of the past is not the only purpose of the Old Testament. Sure it has great stories we all know and love. They teach us how to be good, true, moral Christians and they are full of great testimonies but it’s truly more than that. The Old Testament points us to the coming of Christ in the New Testament, these prophesies are meant to prepare our hearts for Him. In Isaiah 53:2-3, “For He grew up before Him like a young plant, and like a root out of dry ground; He had no form or majesty that we should look at Him, and no beauty that we should desire Him. He was despised and rejected by men, a man of sorrows and acquainted with grief, and as one from whom men hide their faces He was despised, and we esteemed Him not.”

Jesus Comes to Save

The people of the time, however, didn’t prepare their hearts for Jesus’ arrival. They expected the Messiah to be a great and mighty king who would rule over Israel and deliver them from the Roman Empire. This was a reflection of the past the Israelites were used to. They were completely mistaken and completely correct. He was and Is a great and mighty King. But He was not the military ruler and Israel’s King they expected. He didn’t come as just a man to rule just a nation; He came as God and man in the form of a baby, to rule the nations! He came to save not only Israel but the entire world. He lived to die so that we may live with Him forever. He was labeled the Messiah because it means, leader or savior of a group.

Jesus is the Savior for all and the Lord of our lives for those who have accepted Him as their Master. We have many decisions to make in this world but the most important decision we can make is to live for Christ. God gave man free will when He created us so this decision is completely up to us. “And if it is evil in your eyes to serve the Lord, choose this day whom you will serve, whether the gods your father’s served in the region beyond the river, or the gods of the Amorites. But as for me and my house we will serve the Lord.” (Joshua 24:15)
